Updated 25 September 2026. The first eggs dropped on 22 September and none had hatched when we last checked, so part of what follows comes from the game files rather than from something we watched happen. We mark those parts and we will replace them with in-game observations as soon as we have them. The first hatches are due around 29 September.
Counter-Strike 2 has pets now. Chickens, to be exact. They arrived on 22 September 2026 inside the Rush Hour update, and Valve did not write a single line about them. Players found out when their Weekly Care Package offered a Chicken Egg instead of the usual case or skin. This post explains what the egg is, when it hatches, what it turns into, what it needs from you, and what the game files say about the parts that have not happened yet.
TL;DR
- The Chicken Egg is a Weekly Care Package option. It costs both of your picks, it is not in every package, and it cannot be traded.
- It hatches about a week after you claim it, on the date printed in your HatchBook, and grows from egg to chick to pullet to hen. You feed it to keep it, and feed comes from later care packages, which you unlock by ranking up. Feed costs both picks too.
- Egg colour tells you nothing about the chicken. Every egg hatches into the same yellow chick, and the breed and colour only show at the pullet stage.
- There are three breeds with 40 base colours, and most colours shift per chicken, so two birds with the same colour name can look different. There is also a HatchBook photo album with a photo booth, and one pet per account.
What Actually Shipped
The Rush Hour announcement covers the new 3v3 Rush mode, the Premier map picks, silent reloading, crosshair changes and the return of clan tags. The release notes that went up a minute earlier list dozens of changes. The only chicken in either document is one line: chickens now take damage from the Zeus. Pets, eggs and feed appear nowhere. Two follow-up updates on 23 and 24 September fixed reload exploits and crosshair bugs and again said nothing about pets.
Within an hour of the update the first egg turned up on Reddit, dataminer Gabe Follower tied it to the pet files he has been tracking since 2023, and Thour posted the Pet Book images from the game files. So this is not a leak or a test. It is live, it is just unannounced.
How to Get a Chicken Egg
You do not buy the egg and you cannot trade for one. It shows up as one of the four items in your Weekly Care Package, the reward you unlock by ranking up once a week with Prime Status. Normally you pick two of the four. The egg’s card reads “Untradable, consumes both of your rewards”, so taking it means giving up the case and the skin.
Not everyone sees an egg, and it is not only about Prime. No Prime means no care package and therefore no egg, but several members of our Discord and a well-upvoted Reddit thread report a package with Prime and a rank up that simply had no egg in it. So the egg is one possible slot in the package, not a guaranteed one. We will find out on the next reset whether the egg appears again.
After you claim it, the egg does not go into your Steam inventory. It sits in a nest beside your agent on the main menu, with the tooltip “Your egg will hatch soon”. Click it and it wiggles.
Playing in a party? The main menu only shows the party leader’s pet, and you can only open your own pet’s menu when you play solo or host the lobby. Claiming a pet item while you sit in someone else’s party takes you out of that lobby.

About a week, and you do not have to guess the day. The egg’s tooltip in the English localisation file says: “Your Egg is not ready to hatch yet. It will hatch in a week or so from when you got it.” The exact date is printed on the cover of your HatchBook, next to the words “Hatches”, and it is set the moment you claim the egg. Eggs claimed on 22 September are due around 29 September.
The ring around the egg on the main menu is a progress timer. It fills according to a growth percentage that the game asks the item server for, and the menu only draws it, so there is nothing on your side that moves it. Redditors have tested the obvious ideas anyway: playing matches for XP, keeping the game open, picking up chickens on retakes. None of it did anything, and one player watched the bar move a sliver after about twenty hours. That is exactly what a seven-day clock looks like on day one.
When the day comes, the game plays a “Growth Spurt” notification, “Look! Your egg is hatching! Time to meet your chick.”, with one of two hatching animations picked at random. If you are not online at that moment, nothing is lost: the pet’s stage lives on the item, so the egg hatches the next time you open CS2. After hatching the nest disappears and the chick walks around next to your agent on the main menu, and it also stands beside your agent in the loadout screen.
One warning from the files: there is an “Unhatched” notice for an egg that ran out of food, with the line “Never loved. Never hatched. Those two are related.” The menu’s food warnings only start after hatching, and no egg has expired yet, so we do not know how much food a fresh egg comes with. Until we do, check your next care package.
Egg Colours and Rarity
Eggs come in different colours. Reddit has shown white, brown speckled, blue, pale green and pink eggs, and the one in the nest screenshot above, from our Discord, is pale green. Naturally the first question was whether the colour means anything, and a few players have posted “my egg is blue rarity” as if the game had graded it.
It has not. The item schema gives every pet item the same rarity value, “rare”, which is the blue Mil-Spec band that weapon skins use. That is why the egg card shows a blue rarity tint for everyone, no matter what colour the shell is. Nothing in the files links shell colour to a breed or a skin either. The pet does carry a seed value, but the files hold exactly one chick model, so every egg hatches into the same yellow chick. Breed and colour only show once the chick becomes a pullet, which the game’s own milestone text describes as “colors coming in”. Until then, the egg is a coloured egg and nothing more.
From Egg to Hen
This is where the game files fill in what nobody has seen yet. One of our members had an egg for seven hours and asked why it was not hatching. The hatch section above explains why.
The pet then grows through four stages, each with its own notification.
| Stage | What the game says |
|---|---|
| Egg | “Your egg will hatch soon.” |
| Chick | “Look! Your egg is hatching! Time to meet your chick.” |
| Pullet | “Growing fast, colors coming in, and cleared to deploy with you. Get your photos in now. It won’t stay this size for long.” |
| Hen | “A full-grown hen. You raised it well. Enjoy your time together.” |
The item schema stores a “next upgrade date” on the pet, which points to growth on a timer rather than on matches played. How long each stage lasts is not in the client files. Many sites quote 22 days as a chick, 28 as a pullet and 90 as a hen, 140 days in total, but we could not trace those numbers to any source. The files do confirm that the pet cannot be traded and can be named. The menu lets you name it once per stage, starting at the chick (an egg cannot be named), with up to 20 characters, so a chick, a pullet and a hen can each get a new name. It uses a built-in name tag, so you do not need to buy one. There is also a line that reads “You cannot bid on this offer because you already own a pet”, which tells us two things. One pet per account, and a second route exists in the code next to the weekly drop: a bidding offer in the Armory that hides itself once you own a pet. Whether it goes live is unknown.
Feeding Your Chicken
The pet is not a one-time unlock. Chicken Feed is a separate item, and its description is blunt: “Feed your pet to keep it around.” The files carry a food expiration date on the pet and a full set of notifications for when you let it run out.
Feed comes from the Weekly Care Package, the same weekly reward that gave you the egg. The care package code prices it exactly like the egg: claiming feed uses both of your two picks, so a week you feed your chicken is a week without a case or a skin. When your food will not last until the next growth stage, the XP tooltip swaps its usual care package line for “Get feed for your pet the next time you rank up!”. That points at the same package, not at a second source. There are two products, a chick starter bag and an adult chicken bag, both from the fictional Sunnyside brand. No chicken has hatched yet, so nobody has been offered feed so far.
The menu warns you twice. The first warning, “Your pet is running low on food”, is decided by the item server. The second one is decided by the menu code itself: it compares the food expiration date with the next upgrade date, and if the food runs out before the next growth stage it shows “More feed for your pet is available in Weekly Care Packages”. In other words, the game tells you when your current bag will not get the bird to its next stage.
Stop feeding and the pet leaves. The notification is titled “Retirement”, and the game picks one of three lines: “Your pet has accepted a position elsewhere. The offer included meals.”, “Turns out chickens need food. Who knew?”, or “In your defense, it never once complained.” An egg you never feed gets its own title, “Unhatched”. Pets also age out at the end: “A Life Well Lived” tells you the bird no longer needs you and that you can revisit your time together from your profile card. How much feed a chicken needs per week, and whether Valve will also sell feed, is not in the files we could read.
The Three Breeds and 40 Base Colours
The pet definitions name three breeds: the Catalana (the standard Counter-Strike chicken, named after a Spanish breed in the item schema), the Polish (the one with the feather crest) and the Silkie (the fluffy one). Mapper Lillykyu was the first to run the models through a viewer and counted 34 chickens plus the chick, which is where the number 35 that most sites use comes from. The material files hold more: 15 Catalana, 12 Polish and 13 Silkie base colours, 40 in total.
Valve’s own material names read like a poultry catalogue: black with white head, light blue and red, orange with blue neck, and on the Silkie side leopard, tiger, splash and red beetle. Those names are base colours, not fixed ones. On 31 of the 40, the material files shift the hue per chicken, and most also vary the saturation, brightness or contrast per bird. Valve set a separate range for each colour: the Catalana Blue only moves between 119 and 157 degrees on the colour wheel, so it always stays blue, while the Polish Pink, the Silkie Red and the Silkie Leopard can land anywhere on the wheel. Colours with a pattern layer, such as the spots on the Leopard, can also tint that layer separately and place it in one of four positions, and some birds get a rainbow sheen on their feathers of varying strength. Only six base colours have no per-chicken values at all: the Catalana Red Yellow Gradient and White Tan Head, and the Silkie Black, Brown, Brown with Black Head and Tiger. So two chickens with the same colour name can look clearly different.
Where those per-chicken values come from is not visible in the files. The pet item carries a hidden seed, which is the obvious candidate, but that link is not confirmed. Which breed and base colour you get, and with what odds, is not in the files either, so any percentage you see elsewhere is not confirmed.

Every egg comes with a book. The files call the folder Pet Book and the menu calls it “The HatchBook”, subtitled “The life and times of” your pet’s name. It is a scrapbook, not a progression tree: nine pages across three chapters (Chick, Pullet, Hen), each with dashed photo slots that tell you what to shoot, such as “Your chick, up close”, “Your pullet on Dust II or Baggage or Inferno or Train” and “Your hen perched on you, in Sepia”. You fill them by dragging photos in from the library on the right, and the last page just says The End. The tooltip for the shelf of old books reads “Books left by your past pets”, so the album is what remains when a chicken retires.

Click to enlarge The hen chapter. Credits to u/lemonchellocartnite. The photos come from a photo booth with more options than some camera apps. Eleven poses (Solo, Shoulder, Take the Knee, Hawk, Gaze, Big Hug, Overhead, Head, Bird in Hand, Finger, Protect), seven actions (Sit, Panic, Wag, Dance, Jump, Kick, Fly), nine filters, effects from confetti to lightning, seven aspect ratios, a CT or T agent to pose with, your own stickers, and hats: Helmet, Armor Helmet, Alien, Banana, Glasses, Nose Glasses, Party Hat, Sprout, Top Hat, Wizard Hat. Some poses are age gated (“Not old enough for this dangerous pose”), and the hand poses stop working once the bird is too big to hold.
The backgrounds, which the booth calls stages, are gated too. A chick only gets the Photo Studio and the Picnic. The Warehouse unlocks at the pullet stage. The eight map stages, Dust II, Mirage, Inferno, Nuke, Cache, Train, Ancient and Baggage, each unlock when you finish a match on that map on an official server with the pet along, the clearest sign in the files that the chicken is meant to travel with you.
The flavour writing is the most Valve thing about the whole update. Chick pages say things like “Day one. You weighed less than a flashbang and were roughly twice as loud.” The hen chapter has a wanted poster (“Description: small, armed, unbothered”) and a birthday page that asks for a jump in a party hat.
Will the Chicken Show Up in Matches?
Nobody has seen it yet, because nobody has a chicken yet. But the files are much clearer on this than a hint. There is a HUD label for a pet in a match that reads “owner’s name”, so other players see whose bird it is. There is a death notice, “Your chicken has been killed. She was yours for X seconds.” The end-of-match screen places each player’s pet next to their agent, gloves and weapon in the line-up. And the HatchBook has three hidden pages that unlock through achievements named killed-by-burn, killed-by-taser and killed-by-planted-c4: incident reports for a chicken that stood too close to a molotov, a Zeus or the bomb, with lines like “Chicken, extra crispy” and “1 chicken, briefly”. Those same three events also unlock the fire, lightning and explosion effects in the photo booth.
Put together with the pullet milestone (“cleared to deploy with you”) and the map stages above, the picture is this: from the pullet stage the chicken joins you on official servers, it can die there, and dying there is rewarded with a scrapbook page. Which modes, whether it can block a bullet, and what it does all round are questions for the first pullets, which are at least a few weeks away.
What Players Think
The first Reddit thread hit 900 points in a few hours, and the top comment was not about chickens.
“instead of fixing the cheating they gave us this”
- u/IlluminatiMadeMeDoIt on r/cs2
That was the mood in our own Discord as well. In the first ten hours after the update, our general chat produced more than 600 messages, and the egg came back in every one of those hours: should I pick it, what does it do, why is it not hatching. One member did the maths out loud, worked out that the two normal picks were worth about fifteen cents together, and took the egg. Several others followed and compared colours. The criticism aimed at Valve rather than at the chicken: “devs doing this so people forget about the anticheat” was the shortest version, and the egg kicked off a forty minute argument about cheaters in Premier. The one dissenting voice summed up the cycle: people cry about no content, then content arrives, and people cry.
By day three the tone had settled into two camps. The larger one calls the chickens a chore that clogs the drop pool (“the chickens are just chores”, “no anti cheat but chickens”). The smaller one is into it, posting “my egg chillin” and asking when it hatches. Clan tags coming back got more genuine enthusiasm than the pets did. The trading channels said nothing at all, which makes sense for an item you cannot trade.
What We Do Not Know Yet
- How long the chick, pullet and hen stages last. The timers live on the item server, not in the client files.
- What the odds per breed and per colour are, and whether the pet seed decides it at the egg or at the pullet.
- How much feed a pet needs, how often the care package offers it, and whether feed will be sold.
- How much food a fresh egg comes with, and how long it lasts before it runs out.
- In which modes the chicken shows up, and what it does during a round.
- Whether the Armory bidding offer for pets goes live, and whether eggs keep dropping after this week.
The first eggs should hatch around 29 September. We will update this post when ours does.
Our Take
People have been asking for a working anti-cheat for a long time, and a pet chicken is not what anyone expected to get instead. There were leaks, so the idea had been teased for two years, but for a game like CS2 it is still a slightly ridiculous concept, and the community’s reaction shows it. We understand the frustration.
It does add something new to a game that had been standing still, and the amount of care in it is hard to dismiss: two feed products with fake packaging, a photo booth with a banana hat, and a scrapbook that writes jokes about your chicken. If the system turns out to be fun, it might bring lapsed players back to poke around, which is more than most cosmetic drops manage. Whether that is worth two care package picks is your call. Our egg is in its nest. Come tell us about yours in the CS2 Central Discord.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get a pet in CS2?
Through the Weekly Care Package. Since the Rush Hour update of 22 September 2026, the package can offer a Chicken Egg as one of its four items. Claiming it costs both of your two picks, and the egg cannot be traded or sold. The package itself still needs Prime Status and a rank up that week, and the egg is not in every package.
How long does a CS2 chicken egg take to hatch?
About a week from the moment you claimed it. The exact day is printed on the cover of your HatchBook ("Hatches" followed by the date), and the ring around the egg on the main menu fills up as that day approaches. Playing matches, earning XP or reopening the game does not speed it up.
Can you trade or sell a CS2 egg or chicken?
No. The egg card says "Untradable", the pet item in the game files is flagged as cannot trade, and the egg never enters your Steam inventory. There is no market price, so anything you see quoted for a "rare chicken" is made up.
What are the CS2 pet growth stages?
Egg, Chick, Pullet and Hen. The game announces each step with a notification, and the pullet stage is the point where the game says the bird is cleared to deploy with you. From the chick onward you can name your pet once per stage, up to 20 characters.
How many chicken colours are there in CS2?
The game files hold 40 base colours across the three breeds: 15 Catalana, 12 Polish and 13 Silkie. On 34 of them the game shifts the hue, saturation, brightness or pattern per chicken, so two chickens with the same colour name can still look different.
How do you get Chicken Feed in CS2?
From the Weekly Care Package, the same weekly reward that gives you the egg. The game prices feed exactly like the egg: claiming it uses both of your two picks. No chicken has hatched yet, so nobody has been offered feed so far.
Do you have to feed your CS2 pet?
Yes. The Chicken Feed item says feed your pet to keep it around. The menu warns you twice, once when food is running low and once when your food will not last until the next growth stage. Let it run out and the pet leaves with a "Retirement" notice.
What does a CS2 pet actually do?
It lives on your main menu, grows on a timer, and fills a photo album. From the pullet stage the game files put it on official servers with your name over its head, where it can be killed by a molotov, a Zeus or the bomb. There are no gameplay bonuses of any kind.
What is the HatchBook in CS2?
A picture book for one pet. It has three chapters, Chick, Pullet and Hen, plus a photo booth with poses, hats, filters and effects. Books of past pets stay on your profile card.
Are CS2 pets visible in matches?
Not confirmed by anyone yet, because no egg has hatched. The game files are clear that it is planned: pullets and hens can join you on official servers, other players see your name and the pet's name above it, and the HatchBook has pages for a chicken that got burned, tased or blown up.
